Ceremonial shoulder cloth, head cloth, Kantuk people, West Kalimantan. Cotton, warp ikat, early 20th century

$1.00

I am crazy about otherwordly traditional textiles woven by several Ibanic groups in West Kalimantan like this early 20th century ritual ikat cloth from the Nanga Kantuk region. I am so tempted to wear this old piece as a shawl, but I’ve been telling myself to say NO. Kantuk weavers are famous for their extraordinary skills to produce textiles with intricate, sharp and clear geometric designs that look modern, yet traditional and captivating. I heard there’s an effort to revive Kantuk weaving but I guess it will take years before new weavers regain the old skills.
